I got a feeling that Link had been uncertain about his ability to remember important things. Or even felt like he might forget something that matters, like, “I’ve forgotten all the things that were important to me before. What if it happens again?” So he tries to pay closer attention, committing every detail to memory. Sounds, smells, sensations, and all that.
It’s especially true when it comes to Zelda.
AND if we incorporate reincarnation headcanon, which I have, he would be even more conscious about this. He can’t recall everything from his past lives, and his squishy human brain has limited capacity. Painful memories tend to stick with humans more than happy ones, and his lives have been filled with tragedy. That’s why he wants to pass on the small, happy pieces about the person he has loved throughout his lives, like the face she makes when sleeping or the sounds she makes when she’s happy or upset, etc.
